In Southern California heat, architectural shingles generally run 20 to 25 years of real service life, sometimes less on unshaded south- and west-facing slopes that take the brunt of UV exposure day after day. Granule loss is the most common visible sign of aging - once enough granules wash off, the asphalt underneath is exposed directly to UV and degrades faster.

Lighter-colored, cool-roof-rated shingles reflect more solar heat than dark colors, which makes a real difference on inland homes that bake all summer.
