In Southern California heat, architectural shingles generally run 20 to 25 years of real service life, sometimes less on unshaded south- and west-facing slopes that take the brunt of UV exposure day after day. Cost depends on shingle tier (three-tab versus architectural versus designer), roof pitch and square footage, number of layers being torn off, deck condition, and complexity of valleys, dormers and penetrations.
