What happened to SunPower - and who services SunPower systems in San Diego now?

McKay Roofing & Solar is not affiliated with SunPower Corporation and did not acquire its assets. We're a San Diego contractor that services the systems left behind when the original company's installer and service network wound down. We have no connection to the original company, to Complete Solaria, or to the new SunPower brand. We're simply local, licensed, and familiar with the equipment.

Three separate things tend to get lumped together as "the warranty," and they landed very differently:

• Workmanship warranty. If the original SunPower entity or one of its wound-down dealers installed your system, the workmanship warranty - the promise to fix installation-related issues like roof leaks at penetrations or wiring faults - is typically gone. A warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it, and the entities that issued many of those warranties no longer operate. (That's the typical outcome, not legal advice; your paperwork and the bankruptcy proceedings govern your specific situation.)
• Manufacturer equipment warranties. These usually survive, because they're backed by the equipment makers rather than the installer. Maxeon Solar Technologies - the panel manufacturer spun off from SunPower in 2020 - publicly stated after the bankruptcy that it would offer warranty support for SunPower-branded panels. The catch: manufacturer warranties cover the hardware, not the labor to diagnose, remove, ship, and reinstall it. We handle that claim legwork for you - and in many cases we can replace failed equipment at no cost to you under the manufacturer's warranty. Our inspection report tells us whether you qualify.
• Monitoring. Many customers' mySunPower monitoring went dark or unreliable during the transition. If your app stopped updating, your system may still be producing - or it may have been down for months without anyone noticing. That's the first thing we check.

San Diego was prime SunPower territory - the company's high-efficiency Maxeon panels (A-Series, X-Series, and E-Series) were a premium pick here for years, and SunPower's New Homes division put its systems on thousands of new-construction homes across Southern California.

Most local systems are Equinox packages: Maxeon panels with factory-integrated microinverters on the back of each panel, often paired with SunVault battery storage. That architecture is excellent when it works and unfamiliar to many electricians when it doesn't - the integrated microinverters and SunVault's controls aren't generic parts you swap from a supply-house shelf. We work on them regularly.

• $399 system and roof inspection report - credited toward your job. We inspect production, the array, and the roof penetrations underneath - the part of a solar install that fails most expensively - and you get the findings in writing.
• Diagnostics and repair under our active C-10 electrical license: dead panels, failed microinverters, arc faults, SunVault issues, breaker and wiring problems.
• Monitoring restoration, so you can actually see what your system is producing again.
• Detach-and-reset for reroofs. Because we hold roofing and solar licenses in one company, one crew removes the array, reroofs, and reinstalls - no finger-pointing between two contractors.
• Battery retrofit if you want storage added to an existing SunPower array.
